One of those options is ‘surrogacy’, an effective Assisted Reproductive Method, which is widely accepted by the celebs or even normal people like us.

Surrogacy has given a way to prove parenthood life for many infertility couples worldwide. Millions of children have been born through surrogacy. However, the critical aspect is ‘cost’, is it affordable or not?

This article will help you to understand the every aspects of  the surrogacy cost in Morocco with all the included cost components. Also discussing the factors affecting the overall cost.

Introduction to Surrogacy in Morocco

Surrogacy is a way to assist pregnancy for infertility couples, usually with the help of a surrogate mother who agrees to carry pregnancy in her body. Usually, this arrangement is practiced based on a legal agreement between the surrogate and the intended couple.

Surrogacy is a very effective Assisted Reproductive Technology, where pregnancy and delivering a child will be assured to commissioning parents. Let’s know the reason why people prefer to choose surrogacy, not adoption.

Why Choose Surrogacy?

The intended couples choose surrogacy for various medical or infertility reasons. Here are the listed reasons:

  1. Medical issues such as uterine fibroids, uterine scars, abnormal uterine shape, septate uterus, or the absence of a uterus (surgery or medical reasons), etc.
  2. Unexplained infertility reason
  3. Multiple failed IVF attempts or Miscarriages
  4. High-risk Pregnancy
  5. The women have pregnancy complications due to increased age factors.

Usually, surrogacy is also opted by the same-sex couples or even single individuals who want to become parents. However, surrogate & intended couples will have to meet certain criteria to opt for the surrogacy procedure.

Eligibility Criteria- Surrogate & Intended Couple

Surrogacy is a very time-consuming procedure that is filled with emotional and physical complexity. It is important to meet the eligibility criteria for both involved parties- surrogate and intended couples.

Common Surrogate’s Eligibility:

  • She must be in the right age group, usually in her 20s to 30s
  • She must be physically, mentally, and emotionally fit.
  • She must provide her consent for the procedure. If married, then also her husband’s consent matters.
  • She must sign the legal surrogacy contract before proceeding with the embryo implantation procedure.
  • She must be free from a toxic lifestyle (drugs/alcohol/cigarettes).

Common Intended Couple’s Eligibility:

  • The couple will have to provide documents that certify certain medical or infertility reasons.
  • The couple would also have to take necessary legal approvals from the Court.
  • The couple will have to go for a ‘Parentage transfer process’ or ‘adoption’ to be seen as legal guardians of the child.
  • The couple would have to bear the compensation for the necessary medical and health insurance for the surrogate.

These are the common criteria that need to be fulfilled by both the involved parties in general. However, it can differ based on the surrogacy regulation in the respective country.

Two Types of Surrogacy

There are mainly two types of surrogacy practices worldwide- Traditional & Gestational Surrogacy.

  1. Traditional Surrogacy: It is a conventional type of surrogacy practice where the surrogate will be artificially or naturally impregnated with the intended father’s sperm. This practice has made the surrogate mother genetically linked to the child, usually a biologically related birth mother. For this reason, couples now prefer to refrain from the practice.
  2. Gestational Surrogacy: It is a new way and the most preferred surrogacy practice among the intended couples. The surrogate will be artificially impregnated with the formed embryos (eggs & sperm from the intended couple), carry the pregnancy, and deliver the child. This way, both the couple will become the biological and legal guardians of the child.

However, these surrogacy practices could be in an Altruistic or Commercial Form. It depends on the country’s regulations and preferences. Altruistic surrogacy is usually where the surrogate will not get any compensation rewards as Commercial surrogacy is where the surrogate will receive the monetary rewards for carrying the pregnancy.

Surrogacy Laws in Morocco

Considering the current period, Moroccan law has strictly prohibited the use of the Surrogacy method to achieve parenthood. Due to cultural and religious influences & beliefs over the forming policies, have restrained themselves from the use of surrogate pregnancy in their respective society.

However, infertility among couples is seen as a medical condition. Law No. 47-14 states that infertility is a medical problem and allows the use of Assisted reproduction such as IVF, ICSI, IUI, and even IMSI, etc. However, these are also practiced in some strict manner and still do not have any proper or clear regulations regarding it.

As infertility becomes a global issue, it could be possible to abstain from the restrictions regarding it. Let’s hope that the Moroccan law authority will understand sooner.

How Does the Surrogacy Procedure Work?

Surrogacy involves the various stages to be performed in an orderly manner to achieve the desired results. Here are the involved stages for the surrogacy:

  1. You need to choose a ‘good surrogacy agency/center’- Choose a well-established & well-equipped surrogacy center for yourself.
  2. You need to choose a ‘suitable surrogate mother’- Choose a suitable one who can fulfill all the eligibility requirements and pass her fitness tests.
  3. After, a legal agreement will be made- it will be signed by both parties, i.e., the intended couples and surrogates.
  4. The ovarian stimulation procedure begins with stimulating the hormonal injections, and the retrieval procedure is done when the multiple eggs mature.
  5. On the same day, sperm collection will also be done. The sperm will be analyzed and prepared for fertilization.
  6. The fertilization will be performed by mixing both the collected samples in a small petri dish. The embryo will be developed and cultured until the stage of blastocyst.
  7. The ready embryo will then be transferred into the surrogate’s uterus with the help of a small surgical method.
  8. The pregnancy will be confirmed by taking beta hCG blood tests or if required, through ultrasounds. After the pregnancy confirmation in the surrogate’s womb, she will have full comprehensive medical care until the maturity of the pregnancy.
  9. After delivery, the child will be handed over to the intended parents. And last, legal parentage is transferred to the couples with the help of waiving off the rights of the surrogates.
